Changing Face of the Peace

The Peace River country has changed rapidly, especially since the Second World War. The isolation that was such an important feature of the region in the years of the settlement until the 1920s is past. The railroads, modern paved highways, and air transportation with the best communications technology has had a profound affect, bringing change to the region.

Agriculture has been mechanized and it is a modern industry consisting of large farms and ranches. Opportunities exist for young men and women in the mining, forestry, and petroleum industries. The result of these changes is that the Peace River country is less rural, as the number of people living in the country remains the same but the urban centres continue to increase in population and size.

The Peace River country continues to be an important economic, political, and social region in Alberta as its population increases and the wealth produced each year grows. The Peace country has become integrated into every aspect of western Canada, but maintains its own identity defined by its history and the land.
