Displays
The High Prairie and District Museum features a
wide range of fascinating artifacts that recall the history of the
High Prairie district from prehistoric times onward. The entire collection at the High Prairie and
District Museum numbers in the range of 10,000 objects, and so offers
enough variety to entertain a wide range of interests. Much of the
display is arranged in an open replicated floor design, which allows
visitors a close interactive experience with the past.
The Burley Collection
One of the highlights of the museum's display is
the Burley Collection of ancient arrowheads and scrapers. This
collection includes macro-blade samples that are believed to be 9,000
years old, and that are unique examples of their kind in the Canadian
archeological record.
The Randall Collection and Treaty 8 Documents
Visitors interested
in fur trade history will be intrigued by the museum's Randall
Collection of historic pelts, traps, and trapping supplies, while
those who wish to learn more about First Nations history will find
such records as the original Treaty 8 Documents on display.
The Keay Sword
While breaking virgin land
southeast of High Prairie in 1923, Sadie Keay unearthed this
mysterious artifact, a sword with uncertain origins. This unique piece
is not only on display at the Museum, but the image of it is also
included as part of the Museum's logo.
