Grouard Historical Village

The Grouard Historical Village is a place where the culture and history of the Aboriginal peoples of north western Alberta come alive. Go back in time to the years 1879 to 1885, in the place called “Lesser Slave Lake Settlement,” now known as Grouard, to experience some of the old ways of life in tents and tipis.

Our Programs

Pottage BuildingThe Grouard Historical Village offer hands-on programs that are designed to fit the Alberta Learning Curriculum at a variety of grade levels. Interpreters dressed in period outfits are on hand to talk about the exhibits and help the students learn about these important cultures.

Teachers will have the opportunity to choose from different program options to best suit their class and curriculum objectives. Choices include activities such as the preparation of traditional food over a campfire, constructing a tipi, learning about herbs and plants, or games people played when they gathered to socialize.

Fur trade programs teach about trapping and how European and Aboriginal cultures collided and how the Métis Nation was born.

At the Village there are opportunities for people from all cultures to meet and listen to the stories of the local Elders.

The Grouard Historical Village is a great place for us to share the history of an interesting era in a fascinating place. It is a good place to learn about your heritage, or to learn new things about the heritage of your neighbours. It is a place of pride, humour and understanding.
