  • MCHUGH HOUSE
    The Queen Anne Revival style of this substantial brick house was a popular choice for Victorian residences. Its asymmetrical massing and steeply­capped turret were considered picturesque in their day.
  • MCKAY AVENUE SCHOOL
    Edmonton’s first school outside the Fort was erected on this site in 1881. The land was donated by the Hudson’s Bay Company and most of the $968 needed to construct the wood frame school was collected through public subscription.
  • MERCHANTS BANK OF CANADA
    The Merchants Bank of Canada had first opened for business in Lacombe in 1901, and in the following years it doubtless reaped large benefits from being the town's only banking institution.

    Delightful in scale and elegant in detail, this two-storey sandstone structure is the earliest surviving example in Calgary of Classical Revival bank architecture, the style of choice for most of Canada’s chartered banks until the 1930s.

    Built in 1903 to house Neilson Furniture Company, started by Hugh Neilson in 1894, the Neilson Block was enlarged in 1910.

    Alberta's earliest commercial coal mine was operated here at Lethbridge by Nicholas Sheran
  • NIMMONS HOUSE
    Nimmons built this house in 1898 on a high hill having a fine view of the surrounding prairies.
  • PAIN BLOCK
    This is the only wooden building remaining in downtown Calgary to predate the fire of 1886.
