Landmark Building

ASSINIBOIA HALL

University of Alberta Campus, Edmonton
Built in 1845

Assiniboia Hall was the university’s second building. Excavation, begun in the autumn of 1911, was undertaken by one hundred men with shovels, as well as horses and wagons. March 1912 saw masons at work hand cutting the stone and in October 1912 the building was finished. At first, the structure contained lecture halls, administration offices and residences, but by 1915 Assiniboia had become strictly a residence. Constructed by the provincial Department of Public Works, it is virtually identical to the earlier Athabasca Hall.
