Landmark Building

ALBERTA HOTEL

9732 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton
Designed By: James E. Wise.
Built in 1902

The first Alberta hotel structure (1895) was incorporated into the new 1902 building by architect James E. Wise. He accentuated the prominent corner location of the brick and Calgary sandstone building with a circular tower, topped by a distinctive conical roof and flag pole, which was visible even from Strathcona. It originally had its own electrical generator, a roof garden and many other amenities that made it Edmonton’s most prestigious hotel in its early days.
