This railway point was named for the Honourable Charles Stewart (1868-1946), Liberal Premier of Alberta from 1917 through 1921. Originally a farmer in the Killam area, Stewart was first elected to represent the riding of Sedgewick in the Legislative Assembly in 1909 where he represented the riding until 1922. He resigned from provincial politics in 1922 to pursue a career in federal politics which lasted until 1935. He was elected to the House of Commons for Argenteuil, Quebec in a by-election in 1922. In 1925, he was elected to represent Edmonton West and was re-elected in 1926 and 1930 although he was defeated in the 1935 election.
