This railway point was named for the Honourable Charles Stewart (1868-1946), Liberal Premier of Alberta from 1917 through 1921. Originally a farmer in the Killam area, Stewart was first elected to represent the riding of Sedgewick in the Legislative Assembly in 1909 where he represented the riding until 1922. Stewart held several cabinet positions until the defeat of the Liberals by the United Farmers of Alberta in the 1921 election. He resigned from provincial politics in 1922 to pursue a career in federal politics which lasted until 1935. He was elected to the House of Commons for Argenteuil, Quebec in a by-election in 1922. In 1925, he was elected to represent Edmonton West and was re-elected in 1926 and 1930 although he was defeated in the 1935 election. In 1936 Stewart was appointed chairman of the International Joint Commission. |
