This mountain, 3272 m in altitude, was named by Sir James Hector (see Mount Hector) in 1859 after Professor John Hitton Balfour, M.D. (1808-1884). He founded the Botanical Society of Edinburgh in 1836 and was a professor of botany at Glasgow University and Dean of the Medical School at the University of Edinburgh. |
