Willow Island

This name is probably descriptive of the willows to be found on the island. There are at least 35 species of willow in Alberta, and in aboriginal medicine, the inside of the bark of some was used as a painkiller. It contains a substance related to modern-day acetasalicylic acid found in a number of over-the-counter pain remedies.

On Athabasca River approximately 16 km north of Fort McMurray.
