Cree FarmersThe Whitefish Lake Mission came about through the efforts of Henry Steinhauer and Benjamin Sinclair to establish a Methodist mission to the Cree people. Up until the late 1850s, the predominantly Métis community in the area had been ministered to by Missionary Oblates and by establishing a mission at Whitefish Lake, Steinhauer and Sinclair were the first in the region to preach Methodism. With an abundance of fish and relatively rich soil, it was possible for their mission to be somewhat self-sufficient and to serve as a model agricultural settlement.
