As the fall of 1922 rolled into spring, Albertans watched
with fascination as the circumstances of the murder of Alberta Provincial
Police Constable Stephen Lawson unfolded through a preliminary hearing,
trial, appeals and two stays of execution.
Much of the attention,
naturally,
was focused on the two accused—Florence Lassandro and Emilio Picariello. As
soon as the crime occurred, the press energetically reported and the public speculated about the details of case. Just how many
shots were fired? What was the relationship between the accused? However,
one question above all others remained in the minds of those both inside and
outside the courthouse—who actually fired the fatal shot?
