The Premier vs. the Constitution—The Trial

Headline that appeared in the Edmonton Journal, April 17, 1935The case of Aberhart vs. the Constitution was a Depression-era fight between politicians and ideologies. After three bills failed to gain assent from the Alberta lieutenant governor, Premier William “Bible Bill” Aberhart challenged the British North America Act and the Dominion of Canada represented by Prime Minister William Lyon Mackenzie King.

Perhaps less obviously, though, this was also a showdown between the economic revolution of the Social Credit adherents against the status quo of Liberal party federalism.
