Civil Cases

City Hall, Calgary, Alberta, 1909This section of the Great Alberta Law Cases concerns the body of laws that govern the private rights and relationships of Alberta’s citizens. While it is an area of the law that is distinguished from criminal prosecution, it is no less dramatic. In fact, the civil cases included in this section have captured the attention of Albertans as far back as the 19th century.

Vivian MacMillan, 1934Whether it is litigation over the dissolution of a business or a charge of seduction, these cases highlight important periods in Alberta’s growth as a province and the growing pains and scandalous episodes that accompanied this change.

Read, listen and discover the details about these cases and learn about the issues and people at the heart of the disputes and the impact they had on the broader community.
