The
Imperial Order of the Daughters of the Empire (I.O.D.E.) is a women’s organization founded to encourage social service and patrotism.
Founded in 1900, by Montreal woman Margaret Murray, the organization was
conceived to serve various communities in the countries who comprised the
British Empire.
The
I.O.D.E. strives to be an effective body in both
times of peace and struggle. Active in educational, patriotic, and
philanthropic pursuits, the organization has the resources and degree of
community involvement necessary to be quick to action in difficult times. During various war efforts, the I.O.D.E. was able to raise funds to assist
communities in need.
In
addition to the extensive community service the
organization has undertaken, it was designed to forge a bond between the
women and children in all parts of the Empire. A non-political,
non-denominational organization, attitudes of prejudice based on race or
class are not permitted under any circumstances.
The Alberta chapter of the I.O.D.E. is located in
Edmonton and has long been committed to the advancement of Alberta’s
communities. The 1947 I.O.D.E. commissioned report Welfare in Alberta,
released by Dr. Charlotte Whitton of Ottawa,
is but one of many significant
ways in which the organization has impacted the province. Over 100 years
old, the I.O.D.E. continues its work “to improve the quality of life for
children, youth and those in need through educational, service and
citizenship programs.”
