Historic Markerville Creamery

The Historic Markerville CreameryThe Historic Markerville Creamery is located 30 km (½ an hour) southwest of Red Deer, in the town of Markerville. Located within a 5 minute drive of the museum are Stephansson House, the restored home of one of Iceland’s greatest poets, and Hola School, built in 1904. All three sites are under the governing authority of the Stephan G. Stephansson Icelandic Society.

The creamery was integral to the life of the early community by providing a place where people could gather. Historic Markerville Creamery recaptures the spirit of the time with its creamery restored to a 1932 operating condition, complete with churns, pasteurizers, steam engines, and testing equipment. The site also includes a 1939 IHC cream truck, a sun dial, and Icelandic sculptures.

The museum offers bus and guided tours and holds an annual fund raising auction. “Cream Day”, the second Sunday in August, offers even more activities than usual, including demonstrations of ice cream and butter making. Various school programs and summer camps offer children a glimpse into what life was like in the 1930s. Visitors can browse the Pint Size Gift Shop and try traditional Icelandic food at the Kaffistofa coffee shop.
