Athabasca Plain

This area is located in the northeast corner of Alberta. Long stretches of sandy beach occur along Lake Athabasca, including a sand spit (strip of land) that juts three kilometres into the lake at Sand Point. Distinctive landscape features include large areas of kame (funny looking piles of gravel) and kettle (holes made in the ground by glaciers), and active dunes. Active dunes are dunes that actually move! The kames, at over 60 metres in height, are among the largest in the world. A small but significant area of steep rocky peaks called “crag” are also found in the area.

The active dune system is the largest in Alberta. The ancient dunes are unique in Alberta and are aligned opposite to other dunes in the province. Numerous lakes dot the landscape in this portion of the area. Rivers are small and uncommon. Most streams are slow-moving and of the "swampy" type.
