Grouard grew + ard

Grouard is a small village at the west end of Slave Lake. It was originally called Stoney Point, after the Cree word with that meaning. The village was involved in the fur trade during the early 1880s and the Hudson's Bay Company set up a trading post there. By 1900 the population had grown to 300. In 1911, the town grew bigger because the coming of a railway brought more people to the area. By 1912 its population reached 500 people. Some people were calling it the "Edmonton of the North." It had a couple of banks and a number of stores.
