Crowfoot

Category : Locality

Named for the head-chief of the Blackfoot confederacy, Crowfoot (ca. 1836-1890). His native name was Saho-Muxika-Sapo-Mukikow. Crowfoot was a shrewd negotiator, not a warrior, keeping his people at peace with the whites even during the 1885 North West Rebellion. He secured excellent tracts of land for their reserves during the signing of Treaty Number 7 in 1877. Crowfoot stood in good stead with the Canadian Pacific Railway, from which he received a lifetime pass on the railway. He was buried beside the Bow River overlooking the locally named "Treaty Flats."

Approximately 111 km south-east of Calgary.
