Chestermere Lake
Category : Post Office | |
Chestermere Lake was locally known as "Kinniburgh Slough" until 1906, when an intermittent lake was dammed to create the reservoir for the Canadian Pacific Railway irrigation project. There are varied accounts for the origin of the name. Some say it was named for a Lord Chester, a director of the C.P.R. Others say it was named for Lord Chestermere. Another version suggests that some of the early settlers came from Chesterville, Ontario and Nova Scotia, and decided on the present name in preference to "Kinniburgh Slough." Chester comes from the Latin, castra and means "camp," while mere is from the Old English word meer for lake. The C.P.R. built a railroad station here in 1914, but it was never used. In 1959, the land was bought from the Western Irrigation District to build a provincial campsite near the bridge that crosses the north end of the lake. |
