The name Vermilion Chutes refers to both the Rapids and Falls, which appear on older maps. The actual name Vermilion is most probably descriptive of the red ochre on the south bank of the Peace River. The name was recorded as early as 1888 by the Geological Survey of Canada.

Approximately 134 km east south-east of High Level.
